George and John will speak on the OSHA National Emphasis Program; impact on the metal casting industry, pending standards on silica, illness and injury prevention programs, what to expect from Harrisburg in 2012 and OSHA’s site-specific targeting program. George Boyd is a well-know consultant on health and safety issues. John Bugosh is a comparitive newcomer to our industry and serves in the safety capacity at Victaulic.

Course Description

This course, for horizontal sand molding applications, will cover both ferrous and nonferrous theory and practice. A 2-day, lecture course, topics covered include turbulence, solidification, shrinkage, metallostatic pressure effects, gating and riser system design and calculations, mold-wall movement and computer modeling, pouring times, and placement and feeding distance of risers.

After attending this course you will be able to:

  • Calculate runner and gate sizes for optimum fill time and minimum turbulence.
  • Calculate riser sizing for optimum feeding.
  • Describe the use of computer modeling for predicting filing and solidification.

Bonus Day Confirmed: Third Day for Vertical Gating!

Attendees of the Gating & Riser Design course February 14-15, who would also like to learn vertical gating, can attend an optional 3rd day of class on February 16 for an additional $175 (which will be processed as a separate registration). Individuals must register for and attend the Feb 14-15 course in order to register for the 3rd day (due to content covered in the first two days that will not be repeated for day 3).

Note: The AFS Keystone Chapter will subsidize $135.00 of the cost of the course for current AFS Keystone Chapter members. Once you have documentation of payment of the course registration fee from CMI, submit a copy of your registration and payment receipt to the AFS Keystone Chapter along with a copy of your current AFS membership card which indicates your chapter affiliation as KEY (if you cannot locate your membership card we will confirm your Chapter membership from the list provided by AFS) and the AFS Keystone Chapter will reimburse you for $135.00 of the cost of the course.
